Double PhD student Markitantov Maxim successfully defended his thesis within the framework of the joint educational program between ITMO University and Ulm University. This double defense was the result of many years of academic cooperation and allowed the young researcher to receive two academic degrees at once – a Russian PhD and a foreign PhD.

The defense, which took place last week, included a public presentation of the scientific research in online and offline mode. The expert committees of both universities highly appreciated the quality of the completed work, its relevance and scientific significance.

One of the key success factors was qualified scientific guidance. On the Russian side, the supervisor was Karpov Alexey, Professor of ITMO University, Doctor of Engineering. The foreign supervisor was Minker Wolfgang, Professor of Ulm University, Doctor of Engineering.

The dissertation is devoted to multimodal soft biometrics in partial facial conditions, in particular gender recognition and age estimation.

The leadership of both universities is confident that the experience of double defense will become an incentive for the development of further joint projects and strengthening of scientific ties.
